Estar
to be (states, locations, temporary conditions)
Presente
Current actions, habits, and general truths.
— I am well — not perfect, but well. |
— She is at peace with the choices she made. |
| nós | estamos | Nós estamos juntos — e isso muda tudo. — We are together — and that changes everything. |
— They are ready for whatever comes. |
I am exactly where I need to be — not always where I want, but where I need. My friend is in a harvesting phase after years of sowing. We are in a rare moment — conscious and present at the same time. To be is the verb of now: provisional, honest, real.
Pret. Perfeito
Completed past actions — what happened.
| eu | estive | Eu estive tão perto de desistir — e fiquei. — I was so close to giving up — and I stayed. |
| você/ele/ela | esteve | Ela esteve lá quando importava — sempre. — She was there when it mattered — always. |
— We were in the right place at the right time — or it was luck. |
— They were present in every moment that asked for presence. |
The hardest year was also the most formative. I was at my limit for months — and learned where the limit lies. My friend was by my side in every difficult early hour without my having to ask. We were together in the worst weeks and came out closer. Those who were present in the ugly moments are the ones who stay forever.
Pret. Imperfeito
Ongoing or habitual past — what used to happen or was happening.
— I was exhausted but happy — the most honest combination. |
— She was everywhere at once — gift and burden. |
| nós | estávamos | Nós estávamos tão jovens que achávamos que sabíamos tudo. — We were so young that we thought we knew everything. |
— They were tired but didn't stop — it was that time. |
In adolescence, I was always somewhere else mentally — body at school, mind far away. I was constantly between what I was and what I wanted to be. My mum was always available even when I didn't want her to be — a mother's wisdom. We were all learning at the same time — that's what family is.
Futuro Informal
Plans and intentions — "going to." The most common future form in spoken BR Portuguese.
| eu | vou estar | Vou estar lá — pode contar. — I'm going to be there — you can count on it. |
— She's going to be fine — she just needs time. |
— We're going to be together when this passes. |
| eles/elas | vão estar | Eles vão estar esperando na chegada — promessa deles. — They're going to be waiting at the arrival — their promise. |
Next week is going to be intense. I'm going to be available from nine to six — no exceptions. My friend is going to be in the city for the first time in two years. We're all going to be together at Thursday's dinner — already confirmed. Those who are going to be present will understand what's at stake.
Futuro Formal
Formal future — "shall/will." More common in writing than speech.
— I will be present when needed — without having to ask. |
| você/ele/ela | estará | Ela estará bem quando encontrar o ritmo dela. — She will be fine when she finds her rhythm. |
— We will be there to celebrate — it's already in the calendar. |
| eles/elas | estarão | Eles estarão prontos antes do prazo — é o jeito deles. — They will be ready before the deadline — it's their way. |
The commitment was public: Leadership will be available to all during the transition. We will be present at every stage of the process. Managers will be accessible outside normal hours in the first weeks. I will personally be at every team meeting during the first month.
Condicional
Hypotheticals and polite requests — "would."
— I would be better with a little more sleep — always. |
— She would be calmer if she knew what was coming. |
— We would be further along if we had started earlier. |
— They would be more motivated with more recognition. |
If anxiety didn't take up so much space, I would be more present in what matters. My friend would be calmer if he trusted the process more. We would be further along if we had started six months earlier. Organisations would be healthier if presence were valued more than production.
Estar across the tenses
A short story using estar in multiple tenses
My grandmother was always there — it's the only word that fits. She was in the kitchen, on the veranda, at the door. She was available with a constancy I only understood when she was no longer there. We were so much with her that her presence became air — invisible, essential. Today I am, and I make that intentional. Yesterday I was with a friend I hadn't seen for months and the time doubled in value. We were together for three hours and came out as if we had travelled. Next week, I'm going to be more present — less screen, more eye contact. If I manage it, I will be at the family dinner without my phone on the table. I asked my grandmother where she would be if she could be anywhere. She looked around: I would be here. Always here. I never understood why people want to be somewhere else when they have a here that is worth it.
