Presente
Current actions, habits, and general truths.

I've known some people for decades and they still surprise me. My friend knows Brazil in a way many foreign tourists don't. We know the same places but hold completely different versions. Truly knowing takes time — and is worth all of it.
Pret. Perfeito
Completed past actions — what happened.
— I met my best friend on a bus at six in the morning. |
— She got to know Paris in winter and it never left her mind. |

— They got to know the strength of the community in difficult times. |
The exchange programme was the biggest turning point of my life. I met people from forty countries in six months. My Portuguese friend got to know Brazil through me and said she never imagined it was so diverse. We came to know parts of ourselves through each other. Those who got to know without prejudice came away the richest.
Pret. Imperfeito
Ongoing or habitual past — what used to happen or was happening.
— I used to know everyone in the building by name — not any more. |
— She used to know the city shortcuts as if she had drawn them. |
— We used to really know our neighbours — there was time for that. |
| eles/elas | conheciam | Eles conheciam a história do bairro que os jovens nunca ouviram. — They used to know the neighbourhood history the young had never heard. |
When I had lived in the same neighbourhood for ten years, I used to know the baker by name. I used to know the lady on the corner who knew everything about everyone. My mum used to know the neighbours' children as if they were hers. We used to know the street as an extension of the house — that's been lost a little.
Futuro Informal
Plans and intentions — "going to." The most common future form in spoken BR Portuguese.
— I'm going to visit the Pantanal this year — it's been on the list for a while. |
| você/ele/ela | vai conhecer | Ela vai conhecer a família do namorado no próximo mês. — She's going to meet her boyfriend's family next month. |
| nós | vamos conhecer | Vamos conhecer de verdade a cidade onde moramos. — We're going to truly get to know the city we live in. |
| eles/elas | vão conhecer | Eles vão conhecer pessoas que vão mudar a perspectiva deles. — They're going to meet people who will change their perspective. |
The adventure is planned. I'm going to visit Maranhão for the first time in July. My cousin is going to meet her brother's fiancée at Saturday's dinner. We're going to get to know the parts of the city we've never visited. The tourists who are going to discover Brazil for the first time are going to get lost — and that's the best thing that can happen.
Futuro Formal
Formal future — "shall/will." More common in writing than speech.
| eu | conhecerei | Conhecerei cada canto desta terra enquanto houver disposição. — I will get to know every corner of this land while I have the will. |
— She will come to know the world beyond what books show. |
— We will come to know each other better with time. |
| eles/elas | conhecerão | As gerações futuras conhecerão um Brasil diferente do nosso. — Future generations will come to know a different Brazil from ours. |
The mentoring programme was launched: Young people will get to know reference professionals in their fields. We will come to know the community's needs better through this initiative. Participants will get to know territories beyond their usual bubbles. I will personally get to know each mentor before making the pairings.
Condicional
Hypotheticals and polite requests — "would."
— I would get to know more places if I had more time and fewer commitments. |
— She would meet more people if she broke out of routine more. |
— We would know the country better if we travelled by train. |
— They would know more cultures with more accessible exchange programmes. |
If life were more generous, I would get to know all of Brazil's biomes. My geographer friend would get to know every river in the Amazon if he had the resources. We would know the country better if there were more social mobility. People would know each other better if the city were designed for encounter.
Conhecer across the tenses
A short story using conhecer in multiple tenses
My dad used to know everyone — in every city, every queue, every counter, he'd leave with a new friend. He used to get to know people with an openness I didn't understand as a child — I saw it as naivety. We used to know him as the man who was never a stranger anywhere. Today I get to know people with more care — but also more intention. Yesterday I met a neighbour who lives two floors away and we'd never crossed paths in the lift. We know more when we search less and encounter more. Next month, I'm going to visit the interior of Piauí on a trip I've planned for years. If it works out, I will get to know the places my dad knew and used to tell me about. I asked him where he would go to know if he could visit just one place. He answered: I would get to know better the place where my children were born. The nearby is what we most leave to get to know last.
