Current actions, habits, and general truths.
— I've been living in São Paulo for five years. |
| você/ele/ela | mora | Ela mora sozinha num apartamento pequeno. — She lives alone in a small flat. |
— We live near the beach — it's not for everyone. |

The neighbourhood has its own personality. I've been living here for eight years and still discover new alleyways. My upstairs neighbour has lived in the same flat for forty years — she knows the name of every brick. We've lived on the same street for a generation, and that creates a bond the big city doesn't undo. Artists live here because the rent is still manageable — for now.
Pret. Perfeito
Completed past actions — what happened.
— I lived in Lisbon for two years. |
— He lived abroad before returning to Brazil. |
— We lived together for three years before getting married. |
— They lived in seven different countries in their lives. |
The exchange programme changed everything. I lived in a shared room in Dublin with five people from five countries. My Canadian colleague had lived in Brazil before — so we understood each other in two broken languages. We lived in that organised chaos for ten months and came out friends for life. The other housemates lived there for less time, but left equally deep marks.
Pret. Imperfeito
Ongoing or habitual past — what used to happen or was happening.
— I used to live in a student house when I was a student. |
— She used to live in the countryside before moving to the capital. |
— We used to live two blocks from each other. |
| eles/elas | moravam | Eles moravam numa casa enorme que sempre tinha gente. — They used to live in a huge house that always had people in it. |
My childhood smelled of wet earth. I used to live in the interior of Minas, where everybody knew everybody by name. My grandmother used to live a hundred metres from our house — we didn't need a phone. We used to live without rush, without traffic, without notifications. The neighbours used to live with the door open until ten at night — that said everything about the place.
Futuro Informal
Plans and intentions — "going to." The most common future form in spoken BR Portuguese.
— I'm going to live abroad for a while. |
— She's going to live with her parents while she renovates the flat. |
| nós | vamos morar | Vamos morar juntos a partir do próximo mês. — We're going to live together from next month. |
— They're going to live in a smaller city when they retire. |
The decision is made and the suitcase is almost packed. I'm going to live in Florianópolis — it was always a dream and it was never the right moment, so I decided the moment is now. My brother is going to live with me for the first few months to help with the adjustment. We're going to live in a flat with a sea view, if the budget allows. The friends who stayed in São Paulo are going to live on my priority visit list.
Futuro Formal
Formal future — "shall/will." More common in writing than speech.
| eu | morarei | Morarei no exterior durante o período do doutorado. — I will live abroad during the doctoral period. |
| você/ele/ela | morará | O investigador morará na comunidade durante o estudo. — The researcher will live in the community during the study. |
— We will live on campus during the residency programme. |
— The scholarship holders will live in accommodation provided by the university. |
The exchange contract was signed: "The researcher will live on the institute's premises during the twelve months of the programme. We will live in community, respecting the established cohabitation rules. International participants will live in separate wings with shared bathrooms. I will live in the same block as the team, to facilitate daily communication."
Condicional
Hypotheticals and polite requests — "would."
— I would live in any city with a good beach and good bread. |
| você/ele/ela | moraria | Ela moraria no interior se o trabalho permitisse. — She would live in the countryside if work allowed. |
— We would live outside Brazil if the family weren't here. |
| eles/elas | morariam | Eles morariam juntos se o apartamento fosse maior. — They would live together if the flat were bigger. |
If money weren't an equation, I would live on a smallholding in southern Minas — trees, silence, wood-burning stove. My partner would live in the nearest city and we'd visit each other halfway. We would live like that for a while, without a definitive answer — which is sometimes the best answer. The children would live wherever they wanted, and we'd visit them wherever that was.
Morar across the tenses
A short story using morar in multiple tenses
My family used to live in the same neighbourhood for three generations. They used to live on the same street, sometimes in the same house — an inheritance of bricks and affection. The neighbours used to live like relatives, because in a sense they were. Today everyone lives in a different place. I've lived in five cities in ten years. We live scattered, but the end-of-year celebrations prove that the original neighbourhood still exists inside us. Next year, my sister is going to live near our parents again. "If it works out, I will live ten minutes away from them," she says, full of longing. I asked where she would live if she could choose without restriction. She answered without thinking: "I would live where the people I love are. The address is a detail."
