Lembrar across the tenses
A short story using lembrar in multiple tenses
"A dor vai — a memória fica. E a memória dela é bonita."
My grandmother used to remember everything — names, dates, flavours. She used to remember the day each grandchild was born with a different detail. We used to remember her like remembering a safe place. Today I remember her all the time. Yesterday I remembered something she used to say and stopped what I was doing. We remember the same stories every time the family gathers — and they grow each time. On her next birthday, I'm going to remember her out loud for whoever is near. "If I can, I will remember every detail of what she taught me," I wrote in the notebook. I asked my uncle if he would remember her differently with time. "I would remember with more lightness," he said. "The pain goes — the memory stays. And her memory is beautiful."
