Jogar across the tenses
A short story using jogar in multiple tenses
My grandfather used to play dominoes every afternoon with friends from the neighbourhood. He used to play with a strategic smile nobody could read. We grandchildren used to play along when we could, learning more about composure than rules. Today I play football with my friends' children — and feel on both sides at the same time. Yesterday I played my best match in months and there was no audience. We played anyway — because the game is worth it without witnesses. Next summer, I'm going to play with my son for the first time on a team. "If he wants to, we will play together until he no longer wants me on the team," I smile. I asked my grandfather if he would play dominoes again if he could. He looked at the old pieces in the drawer: "I would. Every piece of this game has the voice of someone who's already gone."
