I look at people when they speak — it's the minimum of respect. My friend looks at everything with a photographer's curiosity — even the crack in the wall has a story. The portrait was unforgettable. I looked at that old photo and didn't recognise my grandmother — she was too young. My uncle looked at the same photo and cried without explaining why. We looked together and each saw something different — she has that gift. The old portraits looked back at us that afternoon.

In childhood, I used to look at adults and think they knew everything. My dad used to look at me with a patience I only understood when I had children. We used to look at the sky during storms — fear and fascination together. The teachers who used to look at each student individually were the ones who stayed in the memory.

Futuro Informal

Plans and intentions — "going to." The most common future form in spoken BR Portuguese.

Futuro Formal

Formal future — "shall/will." More common in writing than speech.

Mini story — Futuro Formal

O manifesto foi publicado: "A comissão olhará para cada caso individualmente, sem generalizar. Olharemos para os dados com rigor e transparência. Os auditores independentes olharão para os registros sem interferência. Olharei pessoalmente para cada denúncia recebida antes de tomar qualquer decisão."

The manifesto was published: "The committee will look at each case individually, without generalising. We will look at the data with rigour and transparency. Independent auditors will look at the records without interference. I will personally look at each complaint received before making any decision."

Condicional

Hypotheticals and polite requests — "would."

If I slowed down more, I would look at people with more attention. My photographer friend would look at each scene with the time it deserves. A short story using olhar in multiple tenses

Meu avô olhava para o quintal toda manhã — era o primeiro ato do dia. Olhava as plantas, o céu, os pássaros. Nós netos olhávamos para ele olhando e aprendíamos que prestar atenção é uma forma de amor.

Hoje eu olho para o quintal quando posso e sinto ele perto. Ontem olhei para uma foto dele e perceb que tenho os olhos iguais. Olhamos para as mesmas coisas com o mesmo espanto.

No próximo verão, vou olhar o pôr do sol na praia com minha filha. "Se ela me deixar, olharei o mundo com os olhos dela por um dia," pensei.

Perguntei para mim mesmo o que eu olharia se soubesse que era a última vez. Não precisei pensar: as pessoas que amo. Sempre as pessoas.

My grandfather used to look at the garden every morning — it was the first act of the day. He used to look at the plants, the sky, the birds. We grandchildren used to look at him looking and learn that paying attention is a form of love. Today I look at the garden when I can and feel him close. Yesterday I looked at a photo of him and noticed I have his eyes. We look at the same things with the same wonder. Next summer, I'm going to watch the sunset at the beach with my daughter. "If she lets me, I will look at the world through her eyes for a day," I thought. I asked myself what I would look at if I knew it was the last time. I didn't need to think: the people I love. Always the people.
