We used to ask for the blessing every night before sleeping — it was automatic and beautiful. The older people used to ask for respect without explaining why — and we understood it differently when we grew up.

Pedir across the tenses
A short story using pedir in multiple tenses
My grandmother used to ask for the blessing for everyone. She used to ask with her hand outstretched, eyes closed, like someone opening a door. We grandchildren used to ask for her blessing before sleeping — it was the closing of the day. Today I ask for the blessing by message, sometimes by video. Yesterday I asked her for advice on a difficult decision — and she responded with a story, not an answer. We ask for different things with time — less toy, more meaning. Next month, I'm going to ask her to teach me her cornmeal cake recipe. "If you come here, I will ask you to stay the whole week," she replied. I asked what she would ask for if she could ask for anything. Without hesitating: "I would ask for more time with those I love. Just that."
