Beber across the tenses
A short story using beber in multiple tenses
Hoje eu bebo café e penso nele.
My grandfather used to drink black coffee at five in the morning, before anything else. He used to drink it in a small cup, slowly, looking at the garden. We used to drink together when we stayed on the farm — the silence of five in the morning is something else. Today I drink coffee and think of him. Yesterday I drank an espresso that tasted just like the farm's — and stopped in the middle to absorb it. We drink memories like this — in slow sips, with attention. Next summer, I'm going to drink coffee on the veranda at dawn. If my body allows, I will drink like this until I'm eighty. I asked him what he would drink if he could have one last sip. He didn't think: the five o'clock coffee. It was always the best of the day.
