At the office, everyone has their own schedule. I arrive at eight sharp — I'm the first. My colleague Renata arrives at nine with coffee in hand. We all arrive before the boss, who considers this a virtue. The interns always arrive together, as if they plan it at the door.

Futuro Informal

Plans and intentions — "going to." The most common future form in spoken BR Portuguese.

Carnival is coming and the family is going to gather. I'm going to arrive from Salvador on Thursday night. My cousin is going to arrive from Recife early Friday. We're all going to arrive before the street party sets off — that's the plan. Friends from out of town are going to arrive without warning, as always.

Futuro Formal

Formal future — "shall/will." More common in writing than speech.

Mini story — Futuro Formal

A nota oficial do aeroporto informa: "O voo procedente de Lisboa chegará com uma hora de atraso. Os passageiros chegarão ao terminal dois às dezoito horas locais. As equipes de apoio chegarão ao portão quinze minutos antes do desembarque. Chegarei pessoalmente para coordenar o atendimento aos passageiros em conexão."

The official airport notice states: "The flight from Lisbon will arrive one hour late. Passengers will arrive at terminal two at six o'clock local time. The support teams will arrive at the gate fifteen minutes before disembarkation. I will personally arrive to coordinate the service for connecting passengers."

Condicional

Hypotheticals and polite requests — "would."

Chegaríamos às reuniões com tempo para tomar café primeiro. Os clientes chegariam sempre no horário combinado — e todos fingiríamos que isso é normal.

If the world were fair, things would be different. I would arrive at work rested, without an hour in traffic. My boss would arrive in a good mood every Monday. We would arrive at meetings with time to get coffee first. Clients would always arrive at the agreed time — and we'd all pretend that was normal.

Na semana que vem, vai chegar de navio de uma viagem de cruzeiro — primeira vez na vida. "Se tudo correr bem, chegarei transformado," ele brincou.

Perguntei se chegaria a tempo de ver meu filho nascer, se o cruzeiro atrasasse. Ele ficou sério: "Chegaria nadando se precisasse."

For years, my dad used to arrive home from work at half past six on the dot. He used to arrive tired, but always with a smile. We'd hear the key in the door and run to meet him. Today he's retired and arrives home whenever he likes. Yesterday he arrived back from his walk at ten in the morning, beaming. We arrived together from the market late morning — him carrying a bag, me trying to keep up with his brisk pace. Next week he's going to arrive by ship from a cruise — the first time in his life. "If all goes well, I will arrive transformed," he joked. I asked if he would arrive in time to see my son be born, if the cruise was delayed. He went serious: "I would arrive swimming if I had to."
