Andar across the tenses
A short story using andar in multiple tenses
When he was a child, Seu Antônio used to walk everywhere barefoot. He used to walk kilometres to the dirt-road school without complaining. The other boys used to walk with him, forming a noisy line through the cornfield shortcut. Today, at seventy-two, he still walks every day. Yesterday, he walked four kilometres along the riverbank before breakfast. We walked together for a stretch — he at my pace, without pushing. Next week, he's going to walk in the pilgrimage with his church friends. "God willing, I will walk in this pilgrimage for many years to come," he says, smiling. I asked if he would walk less with age. He shook his head: "Whoever stops walking, rusts. I would walk even if it hurt — and sometimes it does. But the feet know the way."
