Acordar across the tenses
A short story using acordar in multiple tenses
Quando era adolescente, Mariana nunca acordava cedo. Sua mãe acordava ela três, quatro vezes toda manhã. Era uma guerra silenciosa e diária.
Hoje é outra história. Acorda antes do alarme — o corpo simplesmente sabe a hora.
When she was a teenager, Mariana never used to wake up early. Her mum would wake her up three, four times every morning. It was a silent, daily war. Today it's a different story. She wakes up before the alarm — her body just knows the time. Yesterday, she woke up at five thirty to run in the park, before the city chaos began. We woke up together at the hotel on the trip to Florianópolis — she was already awake when I opened my eyes. Next week, she's going to wake up at four to catch a flight to Lisbon. "If possible, I will wake up without an alarm," she says, proudly. I asked what the secret was. "I would wake up grumpy at any hour if I went to bed late," she laughed. "Now I sleep at ten. It sounds boring, but I wake up happy — and that's worth everything."
