Everyone lives the way they know. I live in the contradiction of wanting more time and wasting what I have. My friend Fausto lives without plans more than a week ahead — and seems happier than me. We live in the same city but in different worlds sometimes. Children live in the pure present — and we should learn from that.
Pret. Perfeito
Completed past actions — what happened.
— I lived one of the best years of my life in 2019. |
— He lived ninety-two years with health and good humour. |

The documentary about the centenarians of the island moved me deeply. They lived without rush and with purpose. A woman of a hundred and two lived through three wars and two regimes and still laughs with her eyes. We live much less and complain much more. I lived moments of genuine gratitude watching this — and left the room different.
Pret. Imperfeito
Ongoing or habitual past — what used to happen or was happening.
— I used to live in fear before I understood anxiety. |
— She used to live in a rush, without stopping to feel anything. |
— We used to live simply — not many things, a great deal of life. |
| eles/elas | viviam | Eles viviam em comunidade, partilhando tudo. — They used to live in community, sharing everything. |
Before the pandemic, I used to live without noticing how much the routine sustained me. My mum used to live for others — children, grandchildren, neighbours — and that kept her alive. We used to live too fast to notice what we had. The older members of the family used to live with less and complain less — and it wasn't nostalgia, it was the truth.
Futuro Informal
Plans and intentions — "going to."
— I'm going to live each day with more intention. |
| você/ele/ela | vai viver | Ela vai viver uma experiência única no Japão. — She's going to live a unique experience in Japan. |
— We're going to live this phase with lightness and gratitude. |
| eles/elas | vão viver | Eles vão viver aventuras que nós mal conseguimos imaginar. — They're going to live adventures we can barely imagine. |
Next year is going to be different — I've decided. I'm going to live with less screen and more presence. My friend Renata is going to live a month without social media — a courageous experiment. We're going to live this attempt together, holding each other accountable without judgement. Those who manage it are going to live to tell the tale — and so are those who don't.
Futuro Formal
Formal future — "shall/will."
— I will live according to the values I have chosen. |

| eles/elas | viverão | As gerações futuras viverão o legado que deixarmos. — Future generations will live the legacy we leave. |
The graduation speech was simple and direct: "You will live in a world we cannot predict. We will live through times of uncertainty — and resilience will be your greatest asset. The most courageous among you will live in a way that inspires those who come after. I will live to see what each of you builds — and that fills me with hope."
Condicional
Hypotheticals and polite requests — "would."
| eu | viveria | Eu viveria no campo se a internet chegasse bem. — I would live in the countryside if the internet reached there. |
— She would live more peacefully with fewer responsibilities. |
— We would live better with more balance between work and rest. |
— They would live off art if the market were fairer. |
If the world were more generous, I would live without the weight of constant comparison. My artist friend would live off painting — he has talent the market hasn't recognised yet. We would live with more dignity if the basics were guaranteed for everyone. People would live with more purpose if they had time to discover who they are before choosing what to do.
Viver across the tenses
A short story using viver in multiple tenses
Minha bisavó viveu noventa e sete anos.
My great-grandmother lived ninety-seven years. She used to live without rush, with a kitchen garden, chickens, and stories to tell. The neighbours used to live around her like planets around a quiet sun. Today I live in a fifty-square-metre flat in a city of twelve million. Yesterday I lived a moment she would have lived with more grace than me: the sunset through the dusty glass of the balcony. We live in different times — but the sun is the same. Next year, I'm going to live more outside the flat. "If possible, I will live at least one month without a notification," I wrote in my goals notebook. I asked myself how I would live if I knew I had little time. The answer was simple: exactly as she used to live — slowly, with attention, with affection.
