Subir across the tenses
A short story using subir in multiple tenses
Hoje a ladeira ainda existe e eu subo pensando nele.
My grandfather used to climb the slope every day until he was seventy-eight. He used to climb slowly, but he climbed — without skipping a step. The children used to climb with him at weekends, like a procession of love. Today the slope still exists and I go up thinking of him. Yesterday I climbed alone, with earphones, without hurry, and stopped at the same stone bench where he used to rest. We climb generations up the same hillside — each with their own weight, each with their own view at the top. Next month, I'm going to go up with my daughter for the first time. "If she manages it, we will climb to the top," I planned. I asked my uncle if my grandfather would still climb today, if he could. He didn't think: "He would. Every day. That was where he found himself."
